Trump executive order falters; As US judge temporarily halts deportations.

A US judge has issued a stay temporarily halting the deportation of visa holders or refugees under an executive order from President Trump. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a legal case early on Saturday in response to the order. The judge's stay prevents those "caught up" in the aftermath from being deported, the ACLU said. The group estimates that between 100 and 200 people were being detained at airports or in transit. The court decision came as thousands protested at airports in several US states over Donald Trump's clamp down on immigration. His executive order, signed on Friday, halted the entire US refugee programme and also instituted a 90-day travel ban for nationals from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. The dental nurse who became an alligator catcher.

Image
Christy Kroboth gave up her career as a dental nurse to focus on animals with a lot more teeth - alligators. When she started training as an alligator catcher she was the only woman in her class, but - as she describes here - that made her even more determined to show she could jump on an animal many times her size, and tape its jaws tightly shut. When I first got my licence I was only doing this as a hobby, I'd go to work as a dental assistant and catch my alligators on the side. But I got well known for taking the alligators alive, and I'm now doing this as my full time job. I've been a true animal lover all my life. I blame it on my mom. When we were little she was the one that would stop the car, pull over, and help turtles and ducks cross the road. We took in all the strays - cats, dogs, whatever needed a home. I'd never even touched an alligator before and for a split second I thought, 'I can't do this' Where I live in the south part of

Trump's voter fraud claim 'based on evidence'

Image
Image copyright GETTY IMAGES Image caption President Donald Trump believes that millions of people voted illegally in the US election based on "studies and evidence", the White House has said. Press secretary Sean Spicer said Mr Trump "does believe that", but offered no evidence to support the claim when pressed by reporters. Mr Trump has repeated his claim to explain why he lost the popular vote to Democrat Hillary Clinton. But any notion of widespread voter fraud has been widely rejected. "He continues to maintain that belief based on studies and evidence that people have presented to him," Mr Spicer told reporters on Tuesday. What executive actions has Trump taken? What will happen in his first 100 days? Mr Spicer's comments came after the president told congressional leaders behind closed doors on Monday night that three to five million undocumented immigrants had illegally voted in the election. Rigopiano hotel avalanche: Italian rescuers find no sign of life.

Rescuers have removed two bodies from a hotel engulfed by an avalanche in central Italy as a desperate search for up to 35 other people continues. Heavy snow and disruption caused by multiple earthquakes have hindered rescue efforts in the rubble of the Rigopiano hotel, in the Abruzzo region. Rescuers say they have heard nothing in the rubble while sniffer dogs are reportedly unable to locate victims. Two people who were outside the hotel at the time of the avalanche survived. Four earthquakes above magnitude five rocked central Italy on Wednesday, with tremors continuing into the night. The quakes compounded problems resulting from snow and freezing weather, with power lines brought down and villages temporarily cut off. Rescue operations are under way across central Italy and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has said the EU is ready to help.  impact; BEFORE AND AFTER. January 2017 January 2016
